The Victim/Witness Support Program is a program led by the Commanding Officer and supported by the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate. The VLAP program provides counselling for the treatment of victims and witnesses of crime under the UCMJ. The Office of Legal Affairs provides legal advice on a wide range of disciplinary matters to the Squadron Commander as well as subordinate units and partner commands as part of the global mission. We enable commanders to maintain good order and discipline through the efficient and fair administration of military justice, from administrative measures to general courts martial. Division chiefs, first shirts and commanders can call the Legal Office of the Military Judicial Council at 240-612-5750/5996. The Area Defense Council provides independent legal representation to individual members of the Air Force. Airmen subject to adverse administrative action or suspected of violating the Uniform Code of Military Justice may receive confidential legal advice and representation outside the AFDW chain of command. The chain of command for CVS is through the Air Force Legal Operations Agency, which allows CVS to provide independent legal representation and advocacy on behalf of the victim of sexual assault without the risk of interference from the victim`s or perpetrator`s chain of command. Victims identified as sexual assault may apply for an SVC at any stage of the process, either directly or through SARC, FAP, AFOSI or the Legal Department. For a consultation, call 240-612-4672. The Legal Office provides free legal assistance in personal civil matters to eligible beneficiaries, including active and retired military personnel and their dependants.
Examples of personal civil matters include adoption, long-term care, financial responsibility, family relations, the Military Civil Relief Act, landlord-tenant and accident matters. The highest priority is given to Air Force members who require mission-related mobilization or legal assistance. Legal counsel can provide legal advice, conduct general document reviews, draft and send correspondence on behalf of clients, and assist clients in creating forms. However, lawyers cannot represent clients in judicial or administrative proceedings or draft or file legal documents with a court.
